Don’t tell your parents, but today we’re going to encourage you to play with fire. Don’t worry. It’s not as dangerous as it sounds. We don’t want you doing anything illegal. We’re talking about pyrography, or wood burning. Pyrography is the art of decorating wood (and other materials) by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. It literally means “writing with fire.” And it’s awesome.

Pyrography has been practiced for centuries all over the world. It’s an art form almost as old as fire itself. It was popular in the Victorian Era as well as in the late 19th century. And it’s enjoying another surge in popularity right now. Probably, in part, thanks to all those crafty ladies on Pinterest. Is there anything they can’t do?

You can do all sorts of cool things using wood burning techniques. And once you get started, you’ll be hooked. You can create elaborate drawings or simple designs. You can write and you can embellish. Just about anything you can imagine, you can burn. The world is your wooden oyster.

So if you bring the poker, we’ll provide the wood. You can start your very own DIY wood burning project as soon as you get your hands on one of our blank wood panels. Just choose a size and get burning.  Your unique designs will make great handmade gifts or original art for your home.

And if you’re new to pokerwork, there are plenty of online tutorials to help get you started. Here’s a simple pyrography tutorial that shows you how to decorate a cutting board. Once you have the basic idea down, you’ll want to order one of our Plywerk panels. So have fun burning! But do be careful with those hot pokers. We wouldn’t want your moms to worry.
